Collectors who want to track the value of their art, coins or memorabilia have a new way to do it. WorthPoint, an online resource for researching and valuing antiques, art and other collectibles, has launched WorthPoint Indices, which the company calls “the industry’s first and most comprehensive index-linked investment product to statistically measure price trends.”
The WorthPoint Indices analyze over 800 million fair market prices from the past 15 years to track price changes in a number of collectible categories. The results, which the company says highlight “a rapidly growing industry at the convergence of collecting and alternative investments,” are presented in a monthly newsletter that is free to subscribers.
The inaugural WorthPoint Indices newsletter, which focused on rare and valuable coins, tracked the coins from the U.S. Mint’s statehood quarters program that were issued between 1999 and 2008. The newsletter says that, although the vast majority of these quarters are currently worth only their face value, some have errors that make them more valuable. The 25th anniversary of the program this year has also contributed to greater interest in these coins.
Upcoming issues of the newsletter will look at collectibles including sports memorabilia and entertainment memorabilia (such as movie posters and props).
In addition to the Indices, WorthPoint offers a price guide with auction prices for a variety of collectibles; resources for identifying makers’ marks; and a digital library of books on collecting topics.
